LONDON REGENERATIVE MEDICINE NETWORK

MAY MEETING - Wednesday 24th May 2006

The next monthly meeting of the London Regenerative Medicine Network will be held in the evening of Wednesday 24th May at King's College London, Guy's Hospital Campus at London Bridge, London SE1

SPEAKERS

DAME SUZI LEATHER - Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority

The Hwang controversy has highlighted the need to secure public confidence in embryo research.  Regulation in the UK has been successful in that scientifically novel, legally complex and ethically sensitive applications for research are being processed in a transparent and timely fashion.   But regulation cannot stand still and needs to cope with the changes posed by fast moving science, the growing international collaboration in research and the greater public scrutiny of research.  The HFEA has taken steps to further strengthen its regulation so it can cope with risk, engage with researchers and engender trust in and support for research.

DR JULIE DANIELS - Lecturer, Cells for Sight Transplantation and Research Programme, Institute of Ophthalmology + Director, Cells for Sight Tissue Bank, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Transparency of the cornea, and therefore vision, is dependent upon functional limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs) which maintain the corneal epithelium.  Depletion of LESCs results in painful, blinding ocular surface disease. Therapeutic ex-vivo expansion and transplantation of LESCs has been achieved. Julie's presentation will discuss first-hand experiences of the challenges faced by academics wishing to translate their research ideas into clinical practice in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and the EU Tissues and Cells Directive.  The clinical results of the Institute of Ophthalmology/Moorfields Eye Hospital cultured LESC therapy study to date will also be presented.
